Monday Motivation - Status Report

Hello again!!

It has now been exactly one week since I wrote my first Monday Motivation post, where I namely laid out my plans for a mini "hell week" to get my lazy butt back on the right track.

So, how did it go?

Welp.  I need to be honest with you guys:  I woke up early to train on Monday, but the early wakeups definitely didn't stick.  On Tuesday, I woke up to a dusting of snow and a freezing cold apartment, which in turn prompted me to turn on the space heater in my bedroom and hide under the covers until my bedroom felt like a sauna.  It was then and only then that I dared emerge and change into workout garb.  By this time, I was on my way to the gym, and the sun had come out and melted the pesky snow.  So I call it a win!

Wednesday I woke up early with every intention of taking a walk.  But, despite my efforts to keep my workouts on the lighter side to keep me from exhausting myself, I woke up to the sensation of every muscle in my body aching.  Not cute.  So, the 2k walk I had planned for that morning was postponed indefinitely. Luckily, the routine picked back up again on Thursday. I think taking a rest on Wednesday helped with this.

The rest of the week went rather well--I took my weekend rest day on Friday instead of Sunday since I went out Thursday night.  And on Sunday, some friends and I hiked Bjørndalsfjellet, which was both an amazing workout and nature experience!

This week I made a serious effort to keep my diet clean from Monday to Friday, with no alcohol consumed until the weekend.  I stocked up on some healthy favorites, and overall did quite well with my goals for caloric intake and macros.  However, I did end up caving and pouring myself a glass (just one glass!) of wine on Wednesday after spending the hours of 16:00 to 17:30 pining away for burgers and beer.

I accomplished so. Freaking. Much. On the blog front!  Those of you who follow me on Facebook may have noticed the daily postings in your newsfeed.  This has kept me on my toes, but has overall been a fun process. I feel like I have rediscovered the creative joy that was the whole point behind this blog to begin with.

When it comes to school, I have already started preparing for my first exam, which is a whopping three weeks away.  As anyone familiar with my usual learn-the-whole-semester-the-week-before method of studying will testify to, this is quite groundbreaking.

Concluding thoughts
I can't believe I am saying this, but I am turning into a work out in the morning person.  I love the boost of energy it gives me, as well as the exponential improvement it provides to both my brainpower and mental health.  This is one routine I want to continue!  (Although 5 am wakeups are definitely not in the cards for me unless I am catching an early flight.  B person for life over here!). My hope is, once I have conditioned myself a bit better, to train first thing in the morning Monday to Friday, and then enjoy some days off on Saturday and Sunday.

When it comes to diet, I have really been focused on rediscovering the balance between healthy eating and enjoying comfort foods.  While it may be taboo to say this out loud (or to write?), I freaking love junk food.  I love burritos, I love cheese, I love pizza, I love burgers, I love steak, I love potatoes, and I love cake.  And candy. And beer. And wine. And everything bad for me.   And I know that it is completely unrealistic to expect myself to go full health nut.  But more or less clean eating M-F and just generally eating what I want in moderation?  That I can do.  

And so I want to conclude this motivation Monday with some thoughts on body image, diet, and exercise.  I am by no means tracking my health and wellness endeavors as a means of talking myself down, body shaming myself (or anyone else for that matter), or with any other negative intent.  I simply have noticed a huge slump in both my productivity and my mood, and wanted to see if changing out some bad habits might help get me back on the right track.  So far so good!  But I want to continue this plan, albeit on a more relaxed scale, until it becomes an organic part of my routine.

  2. It's so great to see about your progress and totally relateable. There's been so many times I have every intention of waking up to workout out only to wake up to a freezing cold room, and just like you I stay cozy under the covers until the room warms up. Good luck with this week!
